Sailing areas and specifications

The Andaman Sea around the island Phuket is considered one of the most beautiful sailing destinations in Asia. There are five sailing areas: In the west the Similan and Surin Islands, in the south Ko Lon and Racha Noi islands, in the southeast the Phi-Phi Islands, the Phang-nga National Park and the Ko Yao islands and in the east the Krabi region. The distances between the individual islands are ideal for daily sailing trips. Whether for beginners or experienced sailors, with its stable sailing conditions and safe anchorages, Thailand is the perfect place for a dream vacation on a boat. When navigating, pay special attention to reefs that can be found in front of almost every beautiful beach!

Weather and sailing season

There are two seasons and two main wind directions which dominate the weather here. In the dry season, from November to April, there are stable northeast winds with a strength of 2 to 4 Beaufort. The air temperature during this time is 31°C to 34°C, the water temperature 27°C to 29°C. The tides could cause very strong currents, which must be taken into account when swimming. We don’t recommend sailing in the monsoon season from May to October. It means not only a lot of rain, but also more demanding sailing with unexpected southwestern winds up to 6 Beaufort.

The Marinas

The Yacht Haven Marina Phuket is the best starting point for all sailing itineraries. The naval base is only 15 minutes away from Phuket Airport. Here you can buy everything you need for your trip and load the vessel. There are also 8 smaller marinas on Phuket, 3 in the Krabi Lagoon and one on Ko Yao Noi.

Land and people

Thailand welcomes you with warm emerald-green water, countless islands and rock formations with lush vegetation. Idyllic waterfalls and white beaches invite you to linger. All sailing areas around Phuket offer excellent conditions for snorkeling and diving.

Although the tourist crowds come to Phuket for the nightlife, your sailing trip can definitely be enriched culturally. It pays off to enjoy the Big Buddha and the bird’s view over Chalong Bay. The Wat Chalong Temple and the weekend market in Phuket Town are also worth a visit. Phuket Fantasea and Siam Niramit are spectacular stage shows that belong to the highlights of a Phuket vacation.

Cuisine

Thai cuisine consists of a mixture of Chinese and Indian influences and is already famous around the world. The dishes are based on rice or noodles, accompanied by a lot of fresh vegetables and meat or fish. The Kuai Tiao is a noodle soup and is served at any time of the day. Yam Woonsen is particularly popular with Thais: lukewarm salad made from glass noodles, minced pork, onions, tomatoes, garlic, celery and chillies.
